Continuing with its role as world sport’s education partner, the World Academy of Sport (WAoS) has been in London for the last fortnight, delivering their Postgraduate Certificate in Sport Management.

The programme, run in partnership with London’s prestigious Royal Holloway University of London currently has an intake of many delegates of various sporting backgrounds from all over the world. The programme has included presentations, discussions and debates led by leading industry experts and professors.

Its design draws upon the knowledge and experience of these experts along with input from the WAoS International Advisory Board and imparts new ideas and inspirations upon the delegates while group discussions affords them a chance to interpret these ideas and look at applying them in their own relevant fields.

The programme has now been running since 2011 and is tailor made to give delegates that extra edge to take their career to the next level.

Rick Hastie, Finance & Data Officer for the International Cricket Committee (ICC) is one of many delegates to have benefitted from the experience having graduated earlier this year. “I would definitely advise others to join the programme if they wanted a senior management or leadership role in sport. The knowledge I gained is practical, relevant and insightful.”  

Speaking from London, Jock Peggie, Training Manager at the International Rugby Board, was able to speak positively about the programme. 

“I’m finding it really useful,” he reveals. “ I spent 13 years with Scottish Rugby before joining the IRB in July and this course has opened my eyes to other areas within the industry and to other sports that I’ve had no previous experience in. I’m taking an enormous amount from the course.”

“I think the programme is broad enough to be beneficial for people working in different areas of sport development, sporting federations and many other walks of life. I would definitely recommend it.” 

With the presentations and teaching now completed, the project stage of the programme now begins. This stage of the programme requires delegates to use what they have learnt and apply it in a real life setting, usually a planning project from their organisation in which they work. Mentored and assessed throughout the project stage allows delegates to translate content learnt throughout the programme in a practical way as well as expanding ones network given the research required for such a project.

“The course is challenging, broadens horizons and sees with a global perspective,” Jock concludes.
