Our Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) Event Management Programme has been described by one of its participants as “phenomenal.”

The first module, which took place May 20-23^rd, focused on the planning of a major event, looking at factors such as infrastructure and creating an operating plan. The second module advances to the delivery stage, with emphasis on the venues themselves, testing and overall coordination of event delivery. It continues the strong, healthy relationship that WAoS has with the BOC, one that was established in 2011.

Speaking at the event, Ali Mohsen, a Corporate Communications Manager and International Affairs Manager at the National Federation of Handball in Bahrain, gave his thoughts on the course. “For me it was amazing and very useful. I’d had positive feedback, but I didn’t expect it to be this good, I was really impressed. I felt like I was dreaming to be on such a course so early in my career, I feel this is a milestone in my career.” As Ali said, at 29, his career is just beginning, but having been nominated by his colleagues to participate on the course due to his hard work and high aspirations, he epitomizes the nation’s National Handball Federation in its current state. “We are currently going from one phase, shifting to another,” Ali explains. “Previously the jobs at the federation were voluntary, but now they are starting to be paid roles. We have just hired a general secretary. Now the federation has a new vision.”

The programme is tailored specifically for the needs of the BOC, and bestows vital knowledge necessary for hosting, planning and delivering a major sporting event. We are pleased to say that the programme has been a huge driving force for the federation in recent weeks, as Ali, who has also completed the National Federation Management course, reveals. “We are now going to set a new strategy plan; we are trying to use what I have learnt with WAoS to implement a proper athlete pathway and things like ‘what do we have to do’ and ‘how much do we have to spend.’”  

The skills he has acquired through the programme are also being put to use through the federation bidding to host the Handball Youth World Cup. “I was taught in detail about the process of bidding and how to maximise legacy, even about the broadcasting, where we are lacking in knowledge in this region. It was really interesting.”
